From first light to last, the line was never broken as the men who formed it inched slowly upward, climing in that odd rythmic motion that came to be called the Chilkoot Lock-step. As on the White Pass, all individuality seemed to end as each man became a link in the chain. Even separate sounds were lost, merged in the single all-encompassing groan which rose from the slow-moving mass and echoed like a hum through the bowl of the mountains. -- Pierre Berton
